HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) uses lossy or lossless encoding and is best for Apple device photos — iPhone and Mac default format with excellent compression efficiency. AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) uses lossy or lossless encoding and excels at next-gen web images — royalty-free format with better compression than WebP and JPEG. AVIF is supported in Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, and Safari 16.4+. Older browsers like Internet Explorer will not display it. Check your audience's browser support before using AVIF on production sites.
HEIC and AVIF both use modern compression, so the conversion introduces minimal quality loss. For most photos the difference is imperceptible. Choose lossless mode if you need pixel-perfect results.
