AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) uses lossy or lossless encoding and is best for next-gen web images — royalty-free format with better compression than WebP and JPEG. JPEG XL (JPEG XL) uses lossy or lossless encoding and excels at next-gen image archival — better compression than JPEG with support for wide gamut and HDR. Converting between them lets you take advantage of each format's strengths — for example, using a compressed format for sharing and a lossless format for editing. All conversion happens locally in your browser with no file size limits.
JXL offers better lossless compression and supports higher bit depths than AVIF. If you are archiving images or working in a professional photography pipeline, JXL preserves more data.
Converting lossy AVIF to lossless JXL preserves whatever quality exists in the source. The conversion cannot recover detail already lost by AVIF compression, but it stops further degradation.
Lossless JXL files are typically larger than lossy AVIF. A 500KB lossy AVIF might become 1-3MB as lossless JXL. The tradeoff is perfect quality preservation.
JXL supports HDR, wide color gamut, and transparency — similar to AVIF. JXL also has a unique progressive decoding feature that lets images load in stages.
JXL browser support is limited. Firefox supports it, and Chrome had support that was later removed. For web delivery, keep your AVIF originals. Use JXL for archival and local workflows.
